If you have started your own business and cannot afford bookkeeping software – let alone a bookkeeper – you may find the prospect of keeping your own books daunting.

This workshop is designed to help new business owners understand the steps they need to take to set up and manage their own bookkeeping for the first time. It will show you how to do your own bookkeeping in excel – with no start-up costs, software licenses or fees to worry about.

Not only will we show you how to how to keep records and meet your legal requirements, but as qualified accountants we will also give you handy tax tips along the way.

Course outline

At the end of this three-hour workshop, you will understand what records you need to keep and how to file them. In addition, you will be able to:

  • Set up and use an excel cashbook to record transactions
  • Deal with paid and unpaid invoices
  • Record cash transactions and expense claims

Your workshop leader

Carol Lewis is a partner in Brighton-based Bainbridge Lewis, a firm she co-founded in 2010. As well as providing the full range of accounting services – including producing returns for compliance purposes – Carol and her business partner Gail Bainbridge provide growing businesses with hands-on help when it matters most. This can include producing management accounts and advising on and implementing new accounting systems.

Carol has also lectured in accountancy at Brighton City College where she has helped a large number of students pass their accountancy and bookkeeping exams. As such, she is an ideal host for this workshop combining the technical knowledge of a practising accountant, a good understanding of the needs and challenges of start-up businesses and superb training skills.

Where

This bookkeeping workshop is being held at The Whitehawk Inn in Whitehawk. The centre is a local charity that provides information and advice about learning and work, and a range of support activities for adults.
